We have bought and had serviced walk-behind mowers, ride-on mowers, chainsaws and other small hand tools. My farm – W H Powell and Son has been dealing with LJ Cannings for 30 years now.
It started when their new Rep – Arthur Simmons (who we knew) came to see us. We had a demo with a Renault tractor (which we did not buy) and he organised for new grain elevators to be fitted in our grain store.
We also bought a new hay turner.
Things really took off when Geoff Gibbens and Richard Hayle’s became the sales team. Both complemented each other’s personalities -and called on us regularly trying to persuade us to buy a Valtra tractor – they now had the dealership. So, in 2006 we took the plunge and went for a new N 121 tractor.
We were delighted with both the sales and after sales service – I was even taken on a trip to Finland to see the tractors being assembled.
In 2010 we bought another Valtra N 121 – and it is still with us today.
The workshop team service it regularly – even though the dealership was lost to AGCO – which I was very angry about, writing to AGCO to express this.
Meanwhile we also bought a Deutz telehandler, a Samaz mower, a new hay turner, and a new Power harrow.
Cannings were always my go to dealer when looking for new machinery.
They no longer sell much farm machinery – but we have our tractor and telehandler serviced by them – Ben and his team in the workshop are always helpful. Ben has also helped me out on the farm when I have had machinery breakdowns.
The staff in the Parts department have always been keen to help, and I am a regular visitor.
I hope L J Cannings continues to thrive – small family firms are the lifeblood of this Country and need supporting.

I first became aware of LJ Cannings 18 years ago when I moved into that area of Oxfordshire. Everybody told me that for all my outdoor and gardening requirements, they were the people to go to. So, I visited Cannings and met Les and his son James, who were exceptionally friendly, clearly knowledgeable, and not at all pushy. They guided me through the options for getting a large sit-on mower/tractor to manage my lawns and gardens. They were very happy to deliver a selection for me to try, although unsurprisingly their first choice turned out to be the best. On delivery, they guided me through how to use it and took great care to ensure I was comfortable with everything.
In subsequent years, I have bought numerous items through them, from large chainsaws, blowers, and trimmers through to smaller things like petrol cans and protective equipment. I have always been welcomed, treated as a valued customer, and no question has ever been too basic for them to treat seriously. When Les retired, the same outstanding service was provided by James.
I cannot recommend them highly enough for their outstanding service, friendliness, depth of knowledge, and clear desire to ensure I bought the right thing. They have never encouraged me to upgrade for the sake of it, but they have also advised me when buying cheaper options might have consequences for my needs.
